I dunno about step by step but here are some tips.

First, Choose a location. Many places require a sealed cell that can be laid on it's side. That said I put a group 51 optima yellow top under the deck where the spare tire was (tire's upright in the left corner).

Put a disconnect switch near the battery in an accessable location. I put a removable-key marine type through the deck right next to the battery. Some people would recommend a fuseable link, but i dunno how much power the starter draws, and skipped it. For racing you probably need a disconnect that's driver accessible.

Cables...
I used a combination of 4awg automotive cable, 2 and 1 awg welding cable (thinner strands are more flexable, price was the same). Connectors were solder type. A plumbers torch should work fine for this kind of thing.
I chose to route them in via the rubber boot the shifter shaft uses.

Positive:
I used the 4awg for between the power distribution point and the starter, and on to the alternator. 1 AWG runs back from the starter to the battery.

Negative:
2awg runs from the rear diff cover to the battery so all the current isn't through the chassis. I also made a new ground strap between the front of the tranny and the radiator-support ground point. The battery is also grounded at center reenforcement bar in the back.
