Weak correlation between filter efficiency and pressure

For a given filtering medium, the more area of filtering medium, the lower the pressure drop, but there are synthetic media that both filter better and offer less resistance to flow than convention filtering paper. Then there are issues of filter integrety. A cheaply made filter might collapse, blocking oil flow, or the paper might tear, meaning there's no filtering at all.
The Purolator Pure One filter isn't too expensive and has tested out very well in terms of both filtering efficiency and pressure drop. At the other end of the price range, Wal Mart's house filter (SuperTech) has impressive claims on the box. I spoke once to a rep from Champion, who makes the filter (along with many other brands) and they said it was in fact a very high quality filter, but I have no independent confirmation.
