You could replace the expansion valve and receiver/drier if you want to do it extra careful.
Otherwise you only need to install two fill nipples on the compressor or low pressure hose for the R134a hoses, vacuum the system and fill it up with an Ester oil that can be mixed with the old R12 oil and the new R134a freon.
When the R134a came out about 10-12 years ago it was a lot of scare tactics from the nay sayers that it couldn't be done without extensive retrofitting of the older systems.
Volvo even came out with a specific list of items that needed to be replaced all depending on what year the car was made.
But just as the bumble bee don't know that it can't fly, many shops just drained and filled the system with the new freon and it worked ok.
Keep in mind that an automobile A/C system is a "ticking bomb" anyway and all kinds of components can break at any point and time even if you have followed the book to the letter in your conversion.
Especially if you try to "scare some life" into a system that has set dormant for some years.
