leaking oil - new trans gasket

I have a '91 T Conv. with 88K miles. It had been starting to leak oil more and more and then got to a point early in the summer that when I poured oil in it virtually leaked out in a stream almost immediately. There is so much oil on the engine and car that I can't even tell where it is coming from. Obviously, I have not driven it. My mechanic did say last summer that the "block to transmission gasket was leaking" and quoted me $1,500 to fix it. (More than I can come up with and keep the 900 spg, the sonett and my regular car running).
I know if I attempted this myself I could probably do it. I have all the tools except an engine lift, have done CV joints, AC, radiator replacement, many brake jobs, shocks, ball joints, one lower A-arm, muffler and heat shields and totally rebuilt most of a '71 Sonett. Anyone done this themselves and could give me advice on whether this is too big a job for an above amateur shade-tree mechanic?
