There is a bushing ... Posted by RS [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 89 900 standard, what else besides shift coupler???, n8, Wed, 31 Aug 2005 07:41:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
There's a rubber bushing in the front of the shifter assembly. The shifter rod should move in a pure twisting motion. When the bushing is bad, the shift rod moves side-to-side and it's difficult to find first, second, 5th, and reverse. The bushings deteriorate from exposure to grease. There's a really bad one in my project car.
It's easy to diagnose - just pull out the accordian-pleat piece in front of the shifter console and watch the shift rod as you move the shifter from side to side.
The bad news is that they have to remove the shifter assembly and take the plastic bottom off it to put the bushing on.
The other thing you'd want to check is the shifter itself: there are 3 torx screws that hold it to the shifter assembly. If they're loose, it could be difficult to find 1, 2, 5 and R. Same if the ball at the bottom of the shifter is badly worn.
If the shift rod twists like it's supposed to and everything else I've mentioned checks out, then the coupler is probably bad.
