Use either Mercedes anti-freeze agent or Zerex G05. Don't waste your time with the green stuff. Extra karma bonus points for using distilled water. Put in a low-temp fan switch. Some say the only difference between Zerex and MB is that one is 1/3 the price of the other. For my cars, I consider the MB antifreeze and distilled water to be worth the investment.
The headgasket is a known weak point on these cars. I've had plenty of cars with an aluminum head and iron block, but these Saabs really seem to eat the HG. If your car has over 100k miles and you don't know when the gasket was last replaced, I would consider it a maintenance item, especially if you are loosing coolant.
Figuire ~$1,000 to have a shop replace, or you can DIY in about 8-12 hours.
Of course, this assumes your Saab is a keeper. If you're goiong to sell it in a year, you can always push the deferred maintenance onto the next guy.
