if hydraulics aren't working, is to remove every other one of the six pressure plate to flywheel bolts, loosen the other three almost all the way, then take THREE fat nuts (1/2"-13 NC works), and pry pressure plate up just a little and push one under each of the three ears of the pressure plate forging that poke out thru the bell-shaped sheet metal part. Then tighten down on the three remaining bolts, and it jacks the pressure plate right up and the fingers drop down, then you can slide the tool into place.
Seems to me a lot easier and neater than Sawzalling through the slave cylinder.
If you can pre-plan this job, the factory tool is not really much money, I think $11 and change to me through our local dealer two years ago. But the universal choke cable housing (or lawnmower throttle cable housing) sounds like a pretty good substitute. Might cost almost as much these days though.
