Tried everything offered here and found other advice from previous posters on other sites, but nothing worked. This is what worked on a 1989 900 - my wife got under the front of the car and looked up through the rubber "under bumper" slats. Then she positioned a flat head screwdriver through the top grill slot up against the right hand raised slot of the part that should be turning and had me hit the end of the screw driver with a mallet (it was right hand as seen from underneath). Voila, hood opened. Seems the cable had lost its rubber where it passes through a loop and catches up there - I think it is stretched, too. So, any advice on whether to repair or replace?
