That the engine was running rough is consistent with the rpms were changing, so it may not be just the tach getting a "bad signal." There could be alot of causes, bad gasoline, or no/old oil come to mind. Also you might have had some rough running if a bit of gasket or other contaminant went through your valve train, bottom end or combustion chamber. The facts that you were able to hold speed and that it runs fine are good, however the problem might recur. If you used cheap gas or don't have enough oil, I would suggest siphoning it out and refilling with Premium or using additives to remove water and increase octane, also change the oil and filter. The fact that it only occurred between 2-4k tells me that it could be more serious but first do the basic maintenance. If it recurs then remove the valve cover and inspect for obvious damage, if no obvious damage, then you might want to remove the head and oil pan for more detailed inspection of the things that go round and up and down...
