Agree with rob - replace the VR - probably worn brushes.
As to how far you can go, it depends. If the battery has a decent charge (you've spent a decent amount of time with the light out), you're probably good for 30 to 45 minutes, depending on how good your battery is. If it's pretty new, you should be OK, if the battery is on its last legs, worry.
A lot depends on the drive. Don't use anything that uses electrical power. Headlights off, blower fan and A/C off. If you will be in stop and go traffic, don't risk it. Stop and go traffic is murder on the battery - the cooling fan will kick on and off, and you'll be on the brakes. Saabs have A LOT of brake lights, and you suck down about 60 watts every time you press the brake pedal. If you're cruising on the highway, staying off the brakes, and have plenty of airflow (and therefore the cooling fan is off), you should be able to get 30 minutes.
I know I've driven home with the red light staring me in the face. Stayed off the brake lights, and hurried home as dusk fell. Still caused a knot in my stomach. A spare battery would be nice, or somebody following me with a set of jumper cables.
