Engine cooling fan not turning off

Intermittent (so far). Started after work yesteday, fan immediately cam on with battery, prior to starting. Fan ran constantly on 30 minute drive home. Removed fan relay in fuse box, kept running. Wouldn't turn off, came on every time with battery light, but off when key turned off. Drove last night with same affect. This AM, fan didn't come on at start up, but appears to work normally. Any ideas? Wires to check for shorts? Stuck thermal switch? Was hot yesterday, went to DMV emissions, failure occured next time I jumped in the car. Raining today and cool, fan appears to operate normally.

Will check further this weekend. Due for oil change, was going to do myself, but may have mechanic change and eval fan if proplem persists.
