1 mm isn't bad, but it might be just enough to make it difficult. The sideways motion on my project car was more along the lines of 5 mm or so, and shifting into anything but 3 & 4 was just about impossible.
One thing that might buy you some time is adjusting the shifter. Below is a link to the Townsend Imports page on shifter adjustment.
Getting to the pinch bolt on the coupling with the car on jackstands is a job for a contortionist, though. This is what worked for me:
- With the car on jackstands, lie under the exhaust downpipe with your feet towards the front.
- Thread your arm between the downpipe and the block, over the steering rack. Once you get your hand there, it's easy to use a small ratchet to loosen the pinch bolt. I tried going in lying behind the engine, and I needed a few extensions and universal joints to loosen the bolt.
No doubt others have developed their own ways of making the adjustment.
Does your 900 have the dogbone-type shift coupler or the older barrel-style coupler? (It doesn't make any difference other than they have dlightly different failure modes), I'm just curious.
