Shortest route for the ground connection is best. Adding a second wire, plus cleaning the existing connections is a good idea. When I upgraded the engine in my 82, I also upgraded the alternator. It works great under most conditions, but has difficulty when running, say, the cabin fan on high, lights on and sound system cranked. Or AC, cabin fan on medium or high, plus cranked sound system. It's always the cranked (multi-amp, 5 woofered) sound system that causes the volt meter to dip under 12. Solution is I need a second battery to help handle the sound system.
