Are they Bougicord wires?
I got Bosch wires for our '89 900 (before I started hanging out here on TSN). They never lasted very long, but they had a 'lifetime' warranty. I used to get new ones (free!) almost every year.
Take off the sparkplug cover plate. Start it cold in complete darkness. Watch for arcing along the wires. Mine would never tolerate a little arcing, it seemed really sensitive & acted like you describe.
If I cleaned them regularly, they'd last longer. Once they start arcing thru a coating of dirt, that damages the surface of the cap/wires. Then cleaning doesn't help.
