firewall seal. IIRC, you're up in the rust belt. The shift shaft tends to rust where it's exposed to the elements and it's hard to remove from the seal. When I pulled the shift rod from my '88 SPG parts car, which had spent most of its life in Syracuse, the rod had rusted to the seal and, when I pulled it out, the seal tore.
The shift rod in the picture I posted came from a Southern car which still had the cadmium plating on the motor mounts and the rest of the underhood stuff. That rod just pulled out of the seal smoothly.
It really takes a lot to damage a shift rod - if one was damaged, the rest of the car it was from wouldn't have too many salvagable parts.
