One possibility is that you've got the pinion bearing blues. If you've been hearing some whining, particularly in 3/4/5 above about 30 mph when under load, then the pinion is bad. As the bearing fails, some of the bits don't line up properly in the transmission and gears get lost. This is an expensive fix, so here's hoping that it is not the problem.
If you've got pinion bearing problems, the best thing is to stop driving immediately so you don't trash the tranny so bad it can't be rebuilt.
