hard pedal, weak braking

Yes, my pedal was hard but I couldn't stop very well. This changed once I installed the new seal. I think a sinking pedal is a symptom of a hydraulic problem. I did have a sinking pedal about a year ago but a new master cylinder fixed that.
The booster seal is a rubber disk with a diameter of about 1.5 inches. There is a hole in the middle and there is a metal ring that attaches to the perimeter, giving it rigidity. When you press the brakes, a rod extends from the booster and pushes the piston inside master cylinder. This rod extends through the hole in said seal. If the hole is worn/elongated then you will leak air and you won't get the braking boost that you should.
The part is $30 and I got it from the dealer. There is a dealer close to my house so it's easy for me to get dealer-only parts.
The best thing about this fix is that it's easy and cheap. Unbolting the master cylinder from the booster takes 2 nuts. You don't have to unbolt the brake lines from the cylinder. If you're gentle, the brake lines are flexible enough to allow you to expose the seal and pry it out with a screwdriver. You can push the new seal into place with your thumb!
That's it.
Again, thanks to Anders/Swedecar for providing the instructions and the part number. He saved me a lot of work and a lot of money. Good luck!!
Aloha, Chris 85t
