Here's a trick when you check for current draw from the battery:
There's a couple things that are supposed to have sorta high draw for a minute or so when you first connect a battery. (For example interior light delay relay or alarms?) Often that'll blow a fuse in a cheapie ammeter.
Disconnect the negative battery cable, & touch it back to the battery post for a minute or 2 so those timers finish booting. Now touch the meter leads (red on the cable, black on the - battery post) before pulling the cable away from the post. That way you don't actually disconnect the battery.
