temp gauge ran super hot...cause for concern or fluke?

Hey gang,
Last night I drove my '91 900TC through one of LA's canyon roads...it wasn't hot at all...low 70s, and super dry air. By the time I got to the top, the temperature gauge was almost in the red, the highest I've ever seen it reach since I've owned the car. I did the climb in 3rd gear, and it wasn't a particularly aggressive climb on my part.
I thought maybe the cooling fan wasn't working, but I tested it later once I got back to my garage and it ran normally.
Is this normal? Should I flush the coolant and have the cooling system checked? I've done the drive before with no ill effects...on hotter daytime drives too, which gives me reason to suspect something should be checked.
Thanks in advance!
Paul H.
