CA smog, passed (but not by much)... long Posted by kenS [Email] (#606) [Profile/Gallery] (more from kenS) on Thu, 6 Oct 2005 13:51:44 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My just-completed CA smog experience, thought I would share----
'87 900T , 5 spd, 180K miles; car has always run nicely, always passed CA-"smog1" (static test for HC,CO at idle and 2500 rpm, no NOx testing) easily. But, this was the first year for "enhanced smog", where they put it on a dyno at 15 and 25 mph, and measure HC, CO, and NOx. Also, I was directed to a "TEST ONLY" facility, and on the renewal document it said (ominously) "Inspection Reason: High Emitter Profile".
Car has minor mods--- 24# injectors, AID, RRFPR, MSD6AL ignition, Aquamist water inj, intercooler fan, K&N air filter. Still has original cat and, believe it or not, the original O2 sensor(!)
I removed the K&N filter, put back the stock airbox; also removed the rrfpr but left on a 2.8 bar fpr, and removed intercooler fan (wouldn't fit with the stock airbox). I left the aquamist in place. Plugs, rotor, wires, etc. are all in good shape, about 10K miles on them. I set the timing to 15deg, warmed everything up during a 15 min drive before pulling in to test station. Car sat for 10 min or so before they started it up.
here's what they measured:
%CO2/ %O2/ HCmax-HCave-HCmeas/ %COmax-%COave-%COmeas/NOmax-NOave-NOmeas
15mph (1800 rpm): 15%/ 0.2%/ (HCppm) 116-31-70/ (%CO) 0.74-0.1-0.27/ (NOppm) 791-237-787
25 (1900 rpm) mph: 15%/ 0.0%/ (HCppm) 91-20-25/ (%CO) 0.62-0.09-0.08/ (NOppm) 730-199-380
So I passed(!), but if I'm reading their form correctly, just barely passed NOx at 15 mph. The technician said that if it had failed at 15mph, he would have let the car warm up a bit more and retested, he sounded certain it would have passed then. The tech seemed pretty knowledgeable about old cars--- said he could tell if a car was going to fail by how long the machine keeps the test going before it signals it is finished? He was thorough, even checked timing (found the access hole and read the numbers without any help).
Anyway, it IS possible to pass the CA test, even with stock LH2.2...
