Thanks for reply.

That sounds like a likely cause. I drove around today for a couple of hours on various errands and no recurrence of sound.

The car does have a bunch of intermittent electrical gremlins which I havent been able to identify the source of. Sometimes the idle hunts. Sometimes the radio dies and has to be recoded. Sometimes the remote locking system doesnt work. Then its OK for a while. This may be part of that pattern or it may be separate, so I guess I will have to wait and see what happens.
