In my experience, a bad wheel bearing will make a kind of humming or growling sound that is speed dependent and may change in intensity when the car is moving through long sweeping corners. It can sound like a crappy set of snow tires. A dying transmission (acutally dying pinion bearing to be more precise) makes a whining sound that seems to come from the center console. However, the whine usually is first heard only in 4th and 5th gears and only when under throttle (it will disappear if you are not accelerating). Other's experiences may vary of course. Neither sound is likely to have anything to do with the actual drive-shafts (which i think you may be referring to). These can be brand new and the wheel bearing can still be bad (it is pressed into the hub assembly). I don't know anything about an updated wheel bearing (others can correct me here). They can last up to 100,000 miles before requiring replacement.
