I admit that perhaps the fix of the automatic antenna is cheap and easy and there are a number of ways to go about it. It still doesnt mean its cool. I remember that stick shift cars from germany and england as not having this feature. the way i remember it is that you have a thread on whip antenna that the driver takes off when parking in public and then reinstates before driving off.
Seems foolproof too. And forget about that sound every time you turn off the radio. And what can break? Seems like the ultimate mod and fix for the antenna issue.
I distinctly remember my father keeping the antenna next to the drivers seat on a number of cars. Then getting out after starting and while warming the car, threading the antenna on. Back then we had German spec MBz and a Porsche 356. Same with the Austin-Healy 3000 and Sprite among others.
Thanks,
Jason
