73's had a smaller ring and pinion, thus making them narrower at the outer tips of the drivers > they were beefed up ~75 and up, so they became wider. That being said, the driveshafts used in a 73 99 were longer than those used in 75 and up 99's. Which means C-900 driveshafts would also be too short to work with the 73 trans. Plus, that trans probably can't handle the HP of a 16V engine, and top speed of the gearing is about 100mph.
Ideally you want to find a trans from a 78-80 99, which also had chain drive as already mentioned.
