I would tend to suspect that wear on the outer edge (and only on one tire) would be caused by incorrect camber (rather than toe). Incorrect toe (in my experience) tends to get distributed across both front wheels. Not to give offense . . . but are you talking about toe (the inward or outward direction of the tires when seen from above) or camber (the deviation from vertical when the tires or viewed from the front)? Just want to make sure that we are discussing the same thing.
In any case I would take off the wheel and check the condition of the frame, ball joints and a-arm. Is anything bent or distorted? Are the balljoints in good shape? On these cars there really is nothing to cause the car to "go out of alignment" other than failed components or damage. Only once you are confident that everything is in order would I go for an alignment.
