I'd resigned myself to nursing the slow leak in my '88 900T for the last couple years; rack seeps, boots are shredded, and we're coming up on 180k after all. But it worked well enough and after switching to the Valvoline red bottle fluid w/stop leak I rarely even needed to add fluid. Then suddenly while driving from Boston to the Adirondacks steering got heavy in corners and I noticed steady smoke in my rearview. Eventually pulled over to discover the PS reservoir empty and fluid burning off the exhaust manifold, so I added the most-of-a-bottle I had on hand, which immediately came out between the metal fittings on that line right over the motor mount in a thin, steady stream which was surely blowing all over my exhaust at highway speed. All I could do was keep driving at that point and stop off for a couple more bottles of fluid in my destination town.
I added fluid the next day and most of a bottle had it running fine again, no drooling from the over-mount connection. It was like that for 4 more days driving around town, neither losing power nor needing additional fluid until I headed back to the coast, when it again arbitrarily leaked everything out that same fitting (including what I tried to add), at almost the same stage of the trip!
Now I'm back on the coast, driving as little as possible w/o PS, NOT WANTING to R&R the whole PS system at this time of year with my current lack of passable workspace. I've always assumed I'd need a new rack eventually but
a)this doesn't act like a rack-specific issue,
b)it couldn't leak so quickly from a fitting I personally (over?)tightened if the pump wasn't making pressure, could it? And
c)I refuse to throw money at a symptom until I know what exactly the problem is,
So has anybody seen this before? If so, was there a successful fix that was more specific than replacing Everything involved?
And how quickly/thoroughly am I wrecking my PS pump by driving it dry? It's got like 5 hours at highway speed on it already: Even it it WAS fine, must I replace it now? Is it rebuildable?
TIA as always. I owe my ride to this board...
