I had an '89 900TC that I wrecked and then picked up an '88 900TC to rebuild. All I did was unbolt the whole top mechanism from the '89 and bolt it into place on the '88. I am pretty sure that whatever minor differences there might be will not be a problem. The whole job was pretty straight forward. It would have been even easier if I didn't have to replace the back window piece.
All in all I would say that you shouldn't have any real trouble at all.
