dimensionally, the cylinders are the same, that is, they both have the same cross-sectional bore area. the newer vac boost provides a bit more assist: 4:1 vs. the older's 3.5:1. the hardlines are not compatible between the old and the new due to the angles in which they screw into the cylinder. you may be able to replace just the hardlines at the cylinder if you were to swap in a newer for older style cylinder/assist, and vice versa - look at two cars to confirm.
i own cars with both and have driven them back to back. functionally, i am unable to detect a difference between how the two systems feel and operate under normal driving conditions. in fact, i am unable to detect a difference between the two when i drive either version extremely hard, either.
hope this helps.
