If it's not the wheel bearings.....?

I'm getting ready to renew a set of steering knuckles to see if I can get rid of some knocking over bumps (ball joints) and a low frequency vibration that increases with speed that I've assumed is wheel bearings.
If this vibration turns out to NOT be the wheel bearings, what might it be? Could this be some kind of tranny problem? It doesn't seem to be getting worse fast, but I've been working from home for a few weeks now and I haven't had the need to drive a lot. When I do, I don't notice the vibes increasing when turning in one direction or the other. And I really first noticed this after replacing shocks and rear control arm bushings. It may have been there since I got the car and just never noticed it because the bushings were shot, way shot.
Anyway, I'm just trying to prepare myself for the worst, because thats usually what it is. I had to do the reverse gear fix when I got the car. It had been ground down and would not engage so every time I change the trans oil theres always some metal on the magnet (a lot less this time). But I'm wondering if the "differential" may be starting to go. The car shifts fine with no popping out of gear anywhere, but it does make that turbine like whine in lower gears. I don't know if it's a typical good whine or an out of the ordinary bad whine as I don't have anything to compare with. But thats a different issue.
So any ideas on a low frequency vibration, speed dependant, that would not be wheel bearings?
