No head unit will provide enough juice to drive a subwoofer to a noticeable output in a convertible. You need at least an eight inch sub in the passenger compartment or a ten in the trunk with a matched amplifier (read the RMS outputs, ignore all claims of max power) to be noticeable with the top down at any speed at all. Bass shakers under the seats may be a better bet as the wind won't carry your sound away.

I recently priced a system install for my new to me SPG. The shop wanted 30 bucks a pair to install my component front speakers, and 20 for the pair to install rear 6x9's with adapter plates to fit under the 4x10 holes. The sub install I priced at a local shop with a history of success in car audio competition(more likely to think outside the BestBuy/Circuit City box). They suggested with my 600watt RMS amp, that I could build a three sided enclosure in the tool side of the trunk floor, on the other side of the brace bar from the spare tire. It would yeild around .5 cubic feet, enough for a high quality ten inch sub. I think I am going to go with the kicker L7 square subwoofer, as they have really small enclosure requirements.
Most car audio shops will just try to stick you with a pre-made enclosure that you bolt down in your trunk, but I routinely carry two racing bikes in the trunk of mine, so that was not an option.
