Avoiding the NY salt-fest is the best thing you can do. Next, pull back the carpet to see how bad it is. I'm about to take my convertible off the road for the winter (maybe more) and go back to the '88 sled. I had to make the painful decision to let the '88 rust last year, but she'll be fine for the immediate future. Check for rust in the box-frame areas just inside of the doors, and especially where the lower A-arms attach to the body. If you've got rot there, either run it through the snow for a year or just sell it.
With a hydraulic jack, I usually lift under the box reinforcing member just behind the front wheels about a third of the way inboard. That member is one of the things that stop the deformation just at the firewall in a very serious crash, so if it's weak it may be time to euthanize.
