there are a few differences Posted by RS [Email] (#15) [Profile/Gallery] (more from RS) on Sun, 6 Nov 2005 16:23:55 In Reply to: 5-spd transmission swap, '87 into '92?, Tim Winker, Sun, 6 Nov 2005 15:43:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Below is the transmisison part number reference from Townsend Imports.
It looks like the '87 transmission is from a non-turbo and most likely has the small inner drivers. The "4" indicates that it has a solid front mount instead of the hydraulic front mount that would be indicated by a "5".
Like Blair said, it has the smaller pinion bearing and the other differences including the lack of a drain plug and a level "bolt" instead of a normal dipstick.
The shifter will be the same, however. The change from external centering to internal centering ocurred in mid '86, so you're OK there.
It appears from the number that the primary chaingear ratio is the same as your '92, so that's good.
If you use this one, you will want to get at least one new inner driver for the large tripod bearing (which your '92 is equipped with), and swap in the good inner driver. When you swap in the inner drivers, you need to keep the bearing carrier flanges and shims from the '87 transmission on their respective sides to keep the differential alignment.
Who rebuilt the '87 transmission?
The Twinsaabs.com link will give you some more info on the gearbox numbers.
