1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
I had an 87 900 5 spd and paid a great guy in NC to do the swap into an 88 Turbo Convert. I drove the car from Asheville to Mile Marker 17 in Georgia on I-95 headed to JAX, Fl. where I lost compression and drifted to the shoulder. It turns out I was less than 40 miles from my destination after driving the car +/- 450 miles in 5 hours, so my average speed was... ?
I had a most relaxing and entertaining afternoon at Pk's Grill at Exit 14 on I-95 in Ga. Visit them and enjoy their creme broulette. It's a good burger and very friendly atmosphere for a gas n go on the Interstate.. and it had been such a lovely morning = I was on the road before dawn and saw the sun rise brilliant oranges and violets against the changing leaves of auburn and orange and crimson of the North Carolina montains. The fog lay in the valleys like so many great lakes of unexplored sea. I've spent some time recently in NC and I find the scenery and the mountains amazing.... ANd it was cold! and I sorta got the heat working in a car I had never driven before and I constantly watched the gauges and wiped away the frost from the windshield heading East - Into the Sunrise. Around 8 I stop for gas... at 10am I stopped at BK for lunch.. but burgers werent up yet so I had a sausage egg n cheese.. it had the smell of theater popcorn. Finally the sun came up./ I took off my shirt and pulled into a rest area to put down the convertible top. It was FREEZING - Wind chill at 90 mph is cold! My fingers were nummb and my teeth chattered when I drove in the shadows, but the fog burned off, and the air warmed and I enjoyed the experience of wind in my hair, sunrise, and autumn in the Carolinas.
..Somewhere.. for maybe fifty miles, I followed a woman who must have had her cruise control set exactly at 105 mph. She was driving a non-descriptve Ford and absolutely flying so I tailed her until she got off at an exit. I discovered that my car runs admirably at 70-80mph and that above 90 it tends to heat up but doesnt over heat.
However. comng into GAa I was keepoing it around 3500rpm and easing off as the temperatur rose. I had run it all morning and had eased back to let it cool. And I had ju left a rest stop for I had pulled in and let it cool and stretched my legs... less than 10 miles later it was rattling and the temp continued to rise...
It turns out the the Mech in Asheville not only still has my n/a 7:1 engine, but ALSO has a rebuilt 9:1 Turbo motor he had intended to put into a car he wrecked basically doing the same thing I did = going around a corner too fast..... So now my car is hopefully on the back of a wrecker headed to my driveway..... The turbo engine, and Mech are 500 miles away.
The lesson = If you put a 5 spd into an engine which had the auto setup , make certain your rings/gaskets, etc are up to the compression./
