The cable is just something you kinda have to deal with. There is an aftermarket manually adjustable cable available but the general thought is that it doesn't handle temp fluctuations too well. In 1998 they started using the hydrolic clutch system found on the OG9-3, there is a kit available to upgrade to this but its spendy. A new style of shift linkage was introduced in 1996 that corrected the problems in earlier cars, this version of the linkage can also be purchased.
As is the case with mose SAABs they get better the longer the model is around. A 1998 900 is about as good as they get. There are some subtle, yet significant, changes through out the life cycle of the NG900.
It was mentioned earlier that the 9-3 is a better car. It is my personal opinion that this is not the case. Early 9-3s that use the T-5(red DIC) are o.k. IMO. Many people are currently experiencing unavoidable sludging problems with their 9-3s along with T-7 DICs(black) that fail unexpectedly and prematurely. My personal opinion is that the OG9-3 isn't quite as durable as the NG900 and are more prone severe engine problems.
