One of the site sponsors sells a cat-back "sport" system you could bolt up next time yer exhaust needs replacement. I've gotten significantly longer life out of stock/Starla systems (3.5-5 years) but I drive 45 minutes at a stretch. The longer you drive the better opportunity your exhaust has to heat up (especially in winter) and turn acidic water/brine accumulations into vapor, so they go out the tailpipe. Remember water is a chemical byproduct of the combustion process.
'92 S convert too? Is it blue?
Swedish exhausts are hardly restrictive and well-designed. Oftentimes less expensive "economy" cars' exhausts use less-than-efficient routings, mufflers, and especially pipe diameters. Next time you are in a parking lot, check out the inch-or-so pipe diameter on a Japanese car (around the same displacement motor so around as much exhaust volume to flow) and compare it to that of your 13-year-old 900.
I put a 2.5 inch system (turbo-spec, single muffler) system on my non-turbo brick five years ago in the hope of extracting some kind of power out of the motor. Similar to the ricers' results, exhaust restrictions do not become significant until the upper throes of the rev range, and when was the last time you were up there?
In comparison, the 16 valve 900 turbo (in 1985) gained mention in a comparison test for having a "throatier" exhaust than the other cars tested- a Merkur, an Audi 5000S, and a BMW 318i. Even my family's eight-valve collection has a unique sound to it.
