The problem here is probably a "mechanic" that can't understand why the belts are right next to the firewall ("A Saaab?") and figures you're made of money. If you are, you keep coming back. If you're not, you will take your danged ferrin car somewhere that wants your business.
I've wrestled with the headlight attachments myself (car's been hit twice in parking garages, but the only casualty is a white plastic socket/clip) but after a few years you'll have it under control.
Or you can get very, very lucky like I did and have an '88 turbo hatch with euro lights show up at your local boneyard (oops! someone flipped the car) and out they go.
Anyway, I recommend a shop that at least knows what they are talking about with the classic 900s.
