It's probably the brushes. HOWEVER, as I painfully learned this year, there's another mode of failure.
IF the alternator warning light wire (green I think, attaches with a plastic-covered connector to a single terminal on the back of the alt) AND the dashboard warning light does not light up or only lights up dimly (when the key is turned on or just after the motor stalls with a fully-charged battery) then the alternator diodes (1 or more) have opened up and it's faulty.
Once again, check that the connectors are all seated and the battery is charged (or has a jump box on it) and turn the key on two clicks, not necessary to start the car. If the alt light is not on either your battery is not charged (not enough juice to light up the light) or the alternator has failed internally.
Don't take the car to an idiot mechanic like I did. I told them how to get the thing out and they still didn't listen and tried to bang a hole in my firewall.
