Bad fuel caps don't really show any visible symptoms other than what you mention. The only way to find out is to try a different one-they're cheap. I'd start by looking (and smelling )in the spare tire well. If you don't see anything there remove the cover/trunk floor--it's held on by two screws that you can't miss. Now remove the round cover which reveals the fuel pump. Look for a puddle of fuel where it's muonted to the tank. Have you noticed any fuel on the ground under the car? Other places to check are the fuel filter, which is under the car just ahead of the tank, passenger side. There's also a fuel vapor return line that goes through the car-hope that isn't it. There's some grommets for lines that go into the top of the tank (I had one go bad), but you can't check them without dropping the tank.
