yeah, i think it's reasonable to accuse the old sensor. old sensor was not reliably richening mixture, so you were running lean, getting detonation (but also getting better gas mileage). "new" sensor is functioning properly, and fuel computer is again giving the car the gas it needs.
depending on the condition of the car, the quality of the gas, the temperature, etc., you should be able to get 30mph highway.
