I don't understand your confusion. The distributor vac line mentioned in the Haynes manul is refering to the vac advance unit on the distributor. They're one and the same. If you have no line on the vac unit, then the hose is either laying open in your engine compartment and causing a vac leak, or it fell off both the vac unit and the throttle body and you have an unopen vac port on your throttle body. Or someone removed the hose and plugged the nipple connection on the throttle body for some reason. Without vac advance on the distributor you basically get lower gas milage, your power at certain speeds is decreased, plus your combustion chambers get all sooty.
