A failing crank pulley will slip, but it makes a helluva noise doing so and doesn't just spin freely on the end of the crank. Also remember that the alternator shares belts with the water pump: if the crank pulley were somehow not spinning, the car would promptly overheat.
Nathan - when you say you replaced the ground wire from alt to frame, are you talking about the thin black one that screws to the body, or the big thick wire (5-6 inches) that goes directly to the block? That big black wire to the block is the key to the alternator functioning properly: if it is fatigued or breaking then replace it. They go bad when trashed alt bushings let the alt jump all around.
