He's correct in knowing that LH 2.2 (1985-88 turbos) will not directly wire up to the LH 2.4 found in '90, but why not use the existing ('85) stuff on the new motor? I guess it depends on if '90 uses hall sensor on the distributor or a CPS behind the cranky pulley.
How's the wiring harness? Has it been replaced or is it dead?
Plus what's wrong with just changing the head gasket? About the only upgrade you'd do '85 to '90 would be better electronics, a watercooled turbo (new for '88), a slightly revised set of oil passages in the head (new for mid-'88) and a little higher performance turbo (new for '90).
Unless your '85 motor has a ton of miles on it and this other motor does not.
