When you have the valve cover off, use an adjustable wrench and grab the intake cam where you see the hex pattern in the cam shaft.
Tug a little bit on the cam shaft toward the intake and if it is any slack to take up, the tensioner will move over to the next click on the ratchet.
Sometimes when the ratchet tensioner is just about to jump over to the next tension level, tugging on the intake cam can speed up the process, helping it along.
You shouldn't remove the tensioner and adjust it out since you don't know for sure how much to extend the moving part of tensioner. If too much, you will put more stress onto the guides and chain.
