1985 - bumper rotting off!

Sadly, body rot seems to be a bigger issue than I had hoped on the recently acquired 1985 900T. Saab mechanic I bought the car from said under carriage was solid, no rust. I looked underneath and it looked pretty good.
However, yesterday I was very slowly maneuvering into my parking spot, and I merely tapped the bumper in front of me, a regular occurance in the daily city parking ritual. I heard an ominous "crunch," checked the front end, and saw that the right-hand side bumper attachment/post appears to be rusted completely through! As a result, that end of the bumper is just sort of resting there. It doesn't appear to want to fall off entirely, but how far behind can that be?.
Anybody else have this problem? My fear is that the body/frame around the front right-hand side of the car is structurally compromised. Maybe I should have put the car up on a lift and checked it more carefully.
Thanks,
-jw
