Adriaan, The ECU sits inside the cabin, on the passenger kneewall. But, it is connected via a bundle of wires that run thru a corrugated tube/loom thru the firewall behind the vacuum canister. If you spray water in that area, it can run down the tube and wet the multi-connector.
With the ignition off, remove the connector and brush/clean both sides of the contacts and insure that they are DRY. Spray with acontact cleaner and reassemble.
The years of light corrosion and moisture can cause all of the symptoms you describe.
I had this problem a few years ago, it gave me FITS! The cause seemed to be the ignition system, but the car would run on ether. And, the fuel system was perfect. Only after checking every wire did I find the problem.
