The old-style shift lever drops right in. Once you get the shift lever boot pulled up and the 3 torx screws taken out, turn the key to accessory, put it in neutral (IIRC, a cabinetmaker's screwdriver will fit in the broken end of the tube that's welded to the ball so you can move it around), and it should be able to be pulled up.
The thing that might be tricky is if you get a shift lever with a rubber boot and your old one has a leather boot that you want to keep. I've looked it to figure out a way to put a leather one on without tanking the whole thing apart but I've never done it. It might require some stitching.
The nylon shift ball in the pic below is used on the bottoms of the old-style shift levers. The ring with the boss on the side, fits right in the shifter assembly. It's kind of hard to explain in words without that 3rd cup of coffee this morning, but when you see the two shifters in the flesh, you can see that it's just that the materials are different.
A picture is worth a goodly number of words, but all my taken-apart shifters, shift levers, and camera are all at home.
Hopefully this'll be of some help for you.
