Path of damage -- Head gasket thoughts Posted by Landjet [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
When thinking about why Anders mentioned that the first place the head gasket will show leakage, he indicated that it would start in the back and there will be a show of oil. Since mine leaked in both places, I could not tell where it started first, but I wonder if the engine mount has something to contribute. If you look a the way the starboard engine mount is connected to the head, it then becomes a structural member of the engine. So, in addition to the thermal loading and unloading, we have a a terrific amount of structural loading and unloading. I wonder about the engine mounts after they use up their life in the hydraulic lane, and then become more of vibratory transfer point.
So, after the engine mounts don't have the isolation left in them, they would then transfer impact loads in addtion to the torque loads, and then the thermal loads. Doesn't that seem to be too much for the headgasket to take? There are a trifecta of loads imposed to the head that is trying drag an engine along for the ride -- does this make any sense?
