Todd, the very next time you have this problem try this test. You'll need to have a can of carb cleaner, Berrymans B-12 works fine. First make sure you are keeping the fuel tank *more* than half full. Also if you've removed the deck over the spare tire to get to the pump leave it off and have a jumper as described below available.
When this happens next, you crank abunch and it won't fire, pop the hood, pull a vacuum line off the intake plenum, put the wand on the carb cleaner and spray in the open port to a count of three. replace the vacuum line and crank. we are making sure of spark, and proving lack of fuel. if it coughs like it wants to start...
If you removed the floor over the spare tire you can put a jumper on the hot side of the fuel pump to see if it runs. If you have a four door you can take 12v from the inside light on the left side. if a three door you will have to run a longer lead. You will be able to hear the pump if it runs. Then try to start the engine. If it works you can drive like this, we did my wifes car for two weeks until we figured out the real problem. BE SURE TO REMOVE THE JUMPER WHEN YOU SHUT THE CAR OFF.
I bet you have a loose or crusty connection in the left drivers foot well where all of the inside wiring goes thru the firewall (actually the left side of the footwell) and into the engine bay up to the underside of the fuse block.
Open the drivers door, squat on the ground, put your right hand up to the hood opening lever and go up above it to find three connectors. with each one, wiggle the connector while pulling on it to pull apart. Put it back on, and do it again. This is cleaning the connection. Do each of the three. No tools required. My wife is checked out on this, she had to do it twice more after we first figured it out. It's been 18 months since the last "episode".
Put the power connections back on the pump as they first were. You stand back with the pump and have wife turn the key on but not to start. You should hear the pump start briefly and then stop. Normal. Try to start the car then. It should start and the pump should run. If it's too loud to hear you should be able to put a finger on the top of the pump and feel it running.
If any of the above doesn't work (like the jumper directly to the pump) then you may have a pump with a bad spot on the motor and it is intermitant depends upon where it stops on the last shutoff.
