Does this make sense? Hall = electrical problems?

Quick history:
1986 900 8V NA, has always had a strange idle/hunt problem but ran good most of the time. Recently would idle POORLY when wet ouside, damp, cold. Suddenly battery starts being dead, car starts sputtering and running off the battery, limping home...alternator has typical symptoms of not charging.
I replaced voltage regulator, positive and neg battery cables, ran new ground from alt to engine block. No bad wiring that I can find! Car starts with jump, runs great until it starts to get warm, then I absolutely cannot turn on the lights, wipers, fans, nothing! It'll sputter, dim, and then it kills it. Try to start again, battery dead as hell.
So, I removed and tested the alternator which was found to be in good shape. No matter what though, it wouldn't charge the battery!
Yesterday, I was wiggling wires and discovered the hall sensor connection (on the side of the dizzy) was bad. I pulled it loose, connected it directly to the black wiring plug, and the car started, ran, and 'began' to charge the battery! Right as it was getting dark I had to shut down, but I'm going today to get hall parts from a salvage, or possibly get the rebuild kit.
Make any sense? Could the ground for the hall have been touching somewhere? I haven't looked at the dizzy yet, but will as soon as it's daylight today, to see if there's any obvious melted wiring or something. Diz has at least 250K on it.
Danke!
