A week ago (or so) my 86 900 8V NA started idling low, and hunting and such, when it was wet or chilly/damp outside. Then it one day just suddenly started bucking and sputtering, and the headlights and such went dim. I noticed when I turned off anything electrical, it would improve enough for me to get it home. I checked and replaced the positive battery cable, the voltage regulator, and triple checked every ground wire connection that I could find.
I pulled the alternator (after replacing the voltage regulator) and took it to Autozone. They checked it and said it was good! I re-installed it and added another ground wire from the alt body to the throttle cable bracket.
I've also rebuilt the distributor and put a newer, better hall sensor plug wire. Damn I've done all I can think of, but it's not making any difference.
The battery is dead as hell. When I jump it, both lights come on the dash when I turn the key so I know they are good. It fires up immediately, and runs perfecly fine at high idle when cold. The minute it starts to get warm, it begins to act up. If I turn on the headlights, wipers, or anything of that sort, it'll sputter and crap out. Try to start it again and batterys is completely dead.
I know the alt is not charging, and I've done just about everything I can to clean up wires, grounding points etc, but no luck.
The only thing I've not replaced is the battery negative wire, but it looks great and I've cleaned the hell out of the contact points.
BTW, what are the 3 grounds against the engine removal bracket next to the valve cover, passenger side of the engine? Right next to the auxilliary air valve. I've fixed one of those but no help..the others look OK. I'm having a drink.
Any help or suggestions appreciated!
